چکیده

Introduction In veterinary medicine, intervertebral disk surgery is limited to the herniated intervertebral disk which may be situated at any level of the vertebral column, with surgical treatment differing according to the level. At the cervical level of the vertebral column, a ventral corpectomy is the technique of choice as the hernia is most often ventral. When the hernia is lateralized, a hemilaminectomy is more suitable. Thoraco-lumbar herniated intervertebral disks are nearly always ventral or ventrolateral and their treatment is based on a lateral approach. If it is a Hansen type I (Figure 1), a foramino-pediclectomy is preferably chosen over a hemilaminectomy. This is more destabilizing as an articular process has to be sacrificed. If it is a type II, a lateral corpectomy (Figure 2) is preferred. Finally, a lumbo-sacral hernia requires a classical dorsal approach by laminectomy except if it is foraminal or extra-foraminal. In these two particular cases, a transiliac technique, endoscope assisted or not, is effective. Pierre Méheust, DVM Vetoceane, Nantes-Vertou, France

Are magnetic resonance imaging or radiographic findings correlated with clinical prognosis in spinal cord neuropathy?

Dogs presented to the Small Animal Hospital of Veterinary Medicine, University of Tehran were included in the present study if spinal or intervertebral disc involvement was suspected. Clinical signs were recorded as well as general information of the patient such as age, breed and sex. Sixty dogs were examined radiographically and two standard orthogonal lateral and ventrodorsal projections wer...

Intervertebral disk width in dogs with and without clinical signs of disk associated cervical spondylomyelopathy

BACKGROUND Disk-associated cervical spondylomyelopathy (DA-CSM) is a multifactorial neurological disorder in which progressive caudal cervical spinal cord compression is mainly caused by one or more intervertebral disk protrusions. The Doberman pinscher breed seems predisposed for this condition. The underlying cause and pathophysiology of DA-CSM are currently unknown. Recently, wider intervert...

Hansen type I disk disease at T1-2 in a dachshund.

A 7-year-old Dachshund was presented with chronic left thoracic limb lameness and acute neurological deficits to the hind limbs following trauma. A lesion was suspected between C7 and T2 on the basis of neurological examinations. Radiography and myelography identified a calcified intervertebral disk at C7-T1 and an extradural unilateral compressive lesion at T1-2. Computed tomography scans of t...

“Disk extension beyond the interspace”: an investigation into an alternative nomenclature in diagnostic imaging for displaced canine intervertebral disk material

BACKGROUND Displacement of canine intervertebral disk material can be seen directly in diagnostic imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomographic imaging. Canine intervertebral disk herniation can be differentiated into Hansen type 1 and 2 categories by clinical appearance, but anular- and nuclear disk material cannot be distinguished in computed tomographic image...

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Presumptive Ascending/Descending Myelomalacia in Dogs after Thoracolumbar Intervertebral Disk Herniation

BACKGROUND Ascending/descending myelomalacia (ADMM) is a severe complication of thoracolumbar intervertebral disk herniation (TL-IVDH) in dogs. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES To investigate the prevalence and risk factors for ADMM in nonambulatory dogs with surgically treated TL-IVDH. ANIMALS Six-hundred and fifty-two client-owned dogs evaluated for TL-IVDH that underwent decompressive spinal surger...
